As you can imagine I often get asked advice about the first dance song choice. Really it is an important moment. Do you want something to be light and fun, choreographed or romantic? The song should be something that captures the spirit of who you are as a couple. It will become a beautiful memory you will cherish forever.
Lately I have been getting a lot of requests for Debbie Gibson’s song, “Lost in Your Eyes”. C’mon really, a man has to draw the line. I don’t want to sound rude so when I get that request, I usually try to sway them in another direction “True” by Spandau Ballet or if I think I can convince them to want something fun and not slow, “You Make My Dreams Come True”. Say what you want about Hall & Oates, they may be tacky but they know a thing or two about melodies. Maybe I can get them to try songs like “I’m Gonna Keep on Loving You”. I like couples that are open and I love looking at a couple and finding the perfect song that fits their relationship.
Linda wants something fun. She wants our first dance to be “I Hate Myself For Loving You”, Ha ha ha… NOT funny! When I get her to stop joking, we have a totally awesome time talking about all the songs we love and want to hear. (or in my case sing). For our first dance, we have to take into account George is going to be the one singing it. We have to pick something right for him & us soon.
I know one song we won’t be choosing, “Hopelessly Devoted to You”. I get more request for that song than any other ever since Olivia Newton John sang it in Grease. It’s a very popular song and clichéd in some ways. It seems to me that the ones that request that song really don’t know who they are as a couple and usually end up divorced in a few months. I feel the song is a bad omen. I guess that is way harsh. I just have seen so much in my line of business. Sometimes the song does work, maybe it was the first song you ever danced too or maybe your parents danced to that same song. Then it works.
I spoke to some DJ friends to see what they think. Luckily I have gotten to work with DJ Klock entertainment and they love music as much as me. I also spoke to wedding photographers at DJ Photography and Kelli Wyland Photos. They are the ones capturing that special moment, I figured they must have an opinion or two. I spoke to many others in the field of making weddings happen. The consensus seems to be if a couple picks a trendy song, they should make sure the song is being chosen because it is part of them and not because they just don’t know what else to play and they need a song. If a couple is playful, they definitely should consider forgoing tradition and have an upbeat choreographed dance.
My wedding has to be totally awesome every detail. Love is what I do.
Hey let me know what song you want to hear at our wedding.
See you all soon,
Robbie.
